Rev'd Dr. Charlie Bell (He/Him)

Priest & Psychiatrist

Diocese of Southwark

The Rev'd Dr Charlie Bell is a Cambridge-trained psychiatrist and priest in the Church of England, at St John the Divine, Kennington, in the Diocese of Southwark.  As an academic he teaches biochemistry to undergraduates while pursuing his research interest in biological markers that help us identify psychopathy.

He is also openly gay and has written a book called Queer Holiness, in which he examines the Church of England's attitudes towards homosexuality and argues that the Church must embrace all non-heterosexuals if it is to realise the Christian ideals of universal love and opposing injustice. In 2023, he has published another book titled ‘Light to those in Darkness,’ a theological reflection for those in pastoral care roles and a broader challenge to the church to become a place of solidarity and accompaniment.

Among his many roles, he is also an Academic Clinical Fellow with King’s College, London; Module Leader and author, Healthcare Systems and Resource Management, Global MBA, University of London; and a Liveryman of the City of London.
